Images from the UK Residency were documented at two weblogs:
Firstly, notes with images can be viewed at this post as well as this post from Homage to the seed blog. Additional documentation at the Studio blog can be found here - view this artwork plus a final link.
The UK Research Trip was conducted from late September to late November in 2011 providing a rich opportunity for deeper immersion in the realm of Plant Science and Cultural, Scientific, Historical and Educational dialogue around Biodiversity and Seeds. Many significant links with individuals and Institutions came from this invaluable time in the UK visiting with Projects and Organisations all the while investigating contemporary ideas, research directions and public engagement scenarios. One week was spent at the Eden Project in Cornwall and three weeks at the KEW Millennium Seedbank in West Sussex. Remaining time was focused around London destinations for the most part, with a brief trip to Norwich, 2 days in Paris and 4 days in Seoul, Korea.
For an insight into the remarkable project that is the Millennium Seedbank:
Read The Magic of Seeds and the Science of Insuring Earth’s Future by Maria Popova ... an astonishing 5 minute video showcased the MSB and its work. Popova writes: "The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership at the Kew Royal Botanical Garden's Sussex site has been working since 2000 with hundreds of partners in 54 countries to provide an “insurance policy” against the extinction of plants in the wild by storing seeds for future use. In 2007, it banked its billionth seed. By 2010, they had collected seeds from 24,000 different species of plants, representing 10% of the world’s plant diversity. By 2020, the project will have collected 25%. The underground seed vault, if filled wall-to-wall, could hold 100,000,000,000 rice grains or 30 tightly packed double-decker buses."
