In preparation for the Sept-Oct 2011 Residency Sophie Munns took a week-long trip to Cairns in June, meeting a number of people ahead of the residency, collecting rainforest fruits, seeds and pods from around the Cairns Botanic Gardens, Cairns foreshore and on day trips to Mossman Gorge, Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands. A visit to the Australian Tropical Herbarium at James Cook University fostered furhter connections, making for a very productive time when arriving in Sept for the month.
The Artist's Residence located at the eastern edge of the Gardens was a 5 minute walk across to the Tanks Art Centre, and 8 mins to the Garden's Visitors Centre. Staff were incredibly helpful and the entire experience proved to be a highly valuable and most enjoyable one. The month in Cairns was well-documented on both blogs and the Facebook page. The tropical destination was a major highlight of 2011.
